Majolica Bummolo - Sicilian Tradition to Keep Water Fresh
The Bummolo , known in Sicilian dialect as "Bummulu Malandrino" , is a terracotta container with a unique design, used to keep water always fresh, even during the hot Sicilian summers. This fascinating object has ancient origins, with examples dating back to the 12th century, when its tradition spread during the Arab domination in Sicily.
The Function of the Bummolo
The Bummolo is constructed with a perforated cylindrical base, designed to be inverted when filling. Its use is based on a physical principle: the permeable material allows water to transpire, creating an evaporation process that lowers the temperature of the contents. This makes the Bummolo a natural system for keeping water cool, even when exposed to the sun.
History and Tradition
The Bummolo is not only a functional container, but also a piece of Sicilian history and culture. Initially used to contain water, oil or wine, it is today an iconic object of local craftsmanship, rich in meanings and curiosities that continue to surprise and fascinate. Its manufacturing technique, passed down from generation to generation, makes each piece unique and authentic.
